Monday, December 19, 2016 while giving a speech the Russian Ambassador was shot by a Turkish police officer. The ambassador was shot at an art gallery while men and woman including children were there. The attacker was identified as Melvut Mert Altinus, who was a 22 year old member of the riot police squad. Altinus had a shoot out with law enforcement and was killed. The gun man shouted out “Allahu Akbar” which translates to God is Great. The White House and the United Nations felt the attack was wrong and expressed their complete disapproval of it.
Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president claimed the attack was a way to try and end the relationship between Russia and Syria. The people of Russia mourn the ambassador, because he had made many contributions that helped Russia and Turkey tie together. The shooter’s home was raided and his family has been detained. The shooter’s roommate also has been taken in for questioning for officials to see if he had any knowledge about the attack.
Russia and Turkey had a rough relationship up until 2015, but the President of Russia has made multiple claims saying this will not change the mended relationship. Turkey and Russia have been working together recently sponsoring the evacuation of civilians from Aleppo. Security threats are still being made to Turkey, by the Islamic state groups that reside there. Turkey has increased their surveillance, and will try to protect their people as best as they can.
